SHIP INFORMATION
Adventure Ships: Akademik Shokalskiy, Akademik Ioffe, Akademik Sergey Vavilov & Ocean Nova
Exploring Antarctica on our Adventure Ships is the perfect travel experience for the active traveler. Nimble and ice-strengthened, these ships provide exclusive access to the Antarctic Peninsula’s nooks and crannies. Traveling with a tightly-knit group, you can see more and do more. Optional adventures: cross-country skiing, camping, mountaineering, kayaking, and kayak-camping are available on selected departures.
About the AKADEMIK SHOKALSKIY
Small ice-strengthened vessels offering an experience more like a private expedition than a traditional cruise ship. The 72 meter ships were built in Finland in 1983 for polar and oceanographic research. Continuously refurbished since their conversion for passenger use these ships are ideally suited for expedition cruising. They carry a maximum of just 48 passengers in comfortable twin and triple cabins, some with shared facilities, some with private facilities. All cabins have a window and each has a writing desk and ample storage space. The atmosphere aboard is relaxed and informal, more like a private expedition than a conventional cruise. To explore such a region with just a small number of fellow passengers is a real luxury and will help make your Antarctic voyage of discovery and adventure a truly unforgettable experience.
About the AKADEMIK IOFFE & SERGEY VAVILOV
The Akademik Ioffe (and sister ship the Sergey Vavilov) is a modern, ice strengthened vessel that is very comfortable and ideally suited for polar exploration. There is a bar, lounge, library, video room, and dining space for the full passenger complement in one seating, as well as smaller presentation and meeting rooms. There is also a gymnasium, sauna and plunge pool, and an infirmary with a crew doctor. As a relatively new Scandinavian-built exploration vessel, the Akademik Ioffe is very comfortable. All passenger areas are thoroughly heated and air-conditioned. The vessel is maintained to the highest standards and is kept immaculately clean. This vessel has external stabilizers on her hull, a built-in trimming system and a modern hull design, which make for a very stable ship. The Akademik Ioffe carries all current certifications required by law for ensuring passenger safety and wellbeing.
About the OCEAN NOVA (aka. Sarpik Ittuk)
The Ocean Nova was built in 1992 at the Yrskov Shipyard in Frederikshavn, Denmark, to navigate the ice-choked waters off Western Greenland. The ship was upgraded in 2000 and significantly refurbished in 2006 to include a glass-enclosed forward observation lounge on the top deck - and to offer travelers even more of a comfortable retreat after days of exploring ashore. The 73-meter vessel is guided by Danish officers with deep experience in polar navigation. With outside cabins only (all with private bathroom facilities) accommodating up to 68 passengers, the Ocean Nova is a perfect expedition ship for discovering Antarctica.
Expedition Ships: Lyubov Orlova & Clipper Adventurer
Traveling to the farthest reaches of the world doesn’t mean you can’t be comfortable. Our Expedition Ships offer adventure combined with the service and many of the amenities of a classic passenger vessel. The outstanding cuisine may vie with the landscape and wildlife for your attention. You’re traveling in the wake of history’s greatest explorers, with steak in place of pemmican. These expeditions provide quality and value at a good price.
About the LYUBOV ORLOVA
The Lyubov Orlova is an ice-strengthened motor vessel offering a comfortable and affordable way to experience Antarctica. Built in Yugoslavia in 1976 and refurbished in 1999, the Orlova is a 90-meter ice-strengthened passenger ship, accommodating up to 110 passengers. Ship features include a fully equipped lecture hall and theatre, attractive bar and lounge, and also a well-stocked Antarctic library. Accommodation onboard ranges from triple and twin cabins to superiors and suites. All cabins have two lower berths and private facilities with either a porthole or window, and feature a writing desk, sitting space and ample storage.
About the CLIPPER ADVENTURER
A handsome expedition ship, the Clipper Adventurer combines travel to remote locales with superior onboard comfort. Equipped with stabilizers, state-of-the-art sonar, and an ice-hardened hull, the ship can easily navigate the most rugged environments. All-outside staterooms have lower beds, private bathrooms, in-room music, and individual temperature controls, providing a supremely comfortable sailing experience for the 122 guests that can be accommodated on board. A staff of 72 provides gracious hospitality throughout each voyage. Two lounges and a library provide additional restful areas to gather or socialize. You’ll also enjoy the convenience of an onboard hair salon, gift shop, infirmary staffed by a registered physician, laundry, E-mail accessibility, and workout room.
Optional Adventure Activities
**Confirmed at booking on a first-come, first-served basis.**
KAYAKING: Exploring the Peninsula by kayak is an unforgettable experience: plying inlets and waterways, you encounter penguins at water level and glide past massive icebergs, raising your paddle to hear the intense silence. We provide ideal kayaks for this environment: 5 m (16 ft) rudder-equipped Prijon tandem models, which are stable, tough and surprisingly comfortable. Up to 10 travelers per voyage will enjoy at least four kayak excursions, each led by two highly qualified instructors - with a Zodiac safety boat in constant communication, ready to assist if necessary. Possible kayaking sites include Hannah Point/Aitcho Islands, Deception Island, Port Lockroy, Neko Harbor, Paradise Bay and Lemaire Channel. On some voyages a combination of kayaking and ice camping is also available. ($695 per person, subject to change)
ICE CAMPING: Join the select few who’ve camped overnight on the pristine ice shelf of Antarctica. In keeping with our commitment to leave no trace, this is camping at its simplest: an expedition tent and sleeping bag; no fire or meals (you eat aboard the ship before we land); and around you the deepest silence imaginable, broken only by the call of a boastful penguin or the crack of ice breaking in the distance. Your Expedition Team handles all logistics for up to 20 campers on a single night ashore (as always, ice and weather permitting). We generally camp near Port Lockroy on the Neumayer Channel, carefully selecting the site to avoid disturbing wildlife or contaminating vegetation. (free of charge)
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: Another unforgettable way for 10 passengers to experience the spectacular landscapes of Antarctica is on a pair of cross-country skis. Traveling quickly and quietly under your own power, you can explore deeper into the White Continent than you’d be able to reach on foot, while taking advantage of the long hours of daylight. We supply the equipment and expert guides, you provide the energy, enthusiasm and ideally a bit of previous experience - and together we break trail (subject to weather conditions) through an incredible pristine world of snow and ice. ($350 per person, subject to change)
MOUNTAINEERING: If gazing up at spectacular Antarctic icebergs isn't awe-inspiring enough, you can always put your mountaineering skills to work and try climbing one of the ice cliffs. Our expert guides provide detailed briefings and all the equipment you need, then offer helpful direction as you climb. Maximum 10 participants. ($350 per person, subject to change)
